He Qiangcheng, 22, a senior and geology major from Sichuan Normal University, has almost given up trying to act like his childhood hero, Lei Feng.

"I once tried to help a woman with heavy luggage, and she gave me a suspicious look," he complains.
"Then another time, when I returned a lost dining card to the canteen, the staff asked me to use up the cash on it rather than bothering to find the owner."
But, despite having met with rejections, He still wants to be like his idol.
His hero, Lei Feng, was a People's Liberation Army soldier who came to represent altruism, modesty and devotion.
March 5 will mark the 50th year of Lei's death. In 1963, Chairman Mao Zedong designated the day as "Learn From Lei Feng Day" and started a national campaign for people to copy his deeds.
Several decades after the campaign was initiated, there has been a debate about whether the spirit of Lei lives on, and whether an altruistic role model is relevant anymore in a materialist society.
Some think it no longer rings a bell. "In a world when everyone emphasizes the importance of 'me', many of my peers think there's little ground for giving up one's interests purely for the sake of others," says Lin Zi'en, 19, a sophomore English major from South China Normal University in Guangdong.
Commentators, however, point out those who regarded Lei's spirit as being outdated have misinterpreted its meaning.
Yang Haibin, deputy secretary of China Communist Youth League Beijing Committee said: "learning from Lei Feng could be a mutually caring and benefiting act, which is the basis of civilized society. "
And, Lei's spirit can be modern and relevant, says Yang. He believes that lending a helping hand for no reward is an early form of volunteering.
"It's also about being content with a simple and humble way of life," Yang says.
Hu Danhua, 21, an international business major from China University of Political Science and Law, agrees. "I've gained peace of mind and spiritual fulfillment through small acts of kindness, such as teaching village pupils. I could obtain it from nowhere else," Hu says.
In a society with material abundance but a lack of moral fiber, it seems hard to cherish the Lei Feng spirit.
Reports of passers-by hesitating to help people in need are shocking. Cases in which good Samaritans have landed in trouble are well publicized.
But Liu Jifeng, director of the military high technology training department at the National University of Defense Technology, says it is important to help others as much as you can. "If everyone turns a blind eye to the bad side, our whole social system will be in danger," Liu says.
As Lei Feng's anniversary draws near, his spirit has been promoted in a more approachable way.
Guangdong provincial government has updated its campaign slogan from "sacrificing yourself to benefit others" to "doing each other a favor".
In Changsha, Hunan, the hometown of Lei Feng, the slogan is "doing my duty".
Lei's followers among the post-80s and 90s generation regard these moves as humanizing the role model.
They're encouraged to develop their unique interpretation and ways of spreading goodwill.
For instance, Shan Haiping, 19, a freshman English major from Zhejiang Ocean University, believes the spirit means guarding one's principles.
"It's about doing things you feel worthwhile," she said.
Hu Zhongping, professor of education in South China Normal University, says Lei Feng's spirit teaches us to be a good person, who contributes to society.
"It's all about encouraging those who are self-centered to think from other people's perspectives as well," Hu says.

1.Why do we need leap years?

Leap years are necessary to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth's revolutions around the sun. Since our calendar has exactly 365 days in a year, we would lose almost six hours from our calendar every year if we did not add February 29 to every fourth year.
2.Why February 29?
Our calendar is based on the early Roman calendar, which had only 10 months beginning in March.
January and February were added around 700 BCE by Numa Pompilius to reflect a lunar calendar; this made February the last month of the year.
Julius Caesar introduced Leap Years around 45BCE by adding one day to the last month of the calendar year, February.
3.How to calculate a leap year?
Caesar declared that every year evenly divisible by four would be a leap year. While simple, this rule actually created too many leap years to keep the Roman and lunar calendars aligned. More than 1500 years later, a new formula was introduced with the Gregorian Calendar, which we still use today.
4.What if you are born on February 29?
(1) There is 1 in 1461 the chances of being born on leap day.
(2) 4 million people in the world were born on February 29th.
5.Leap year records
(1) most children born on February 29
Mrs. Karin Henriksen (Norway) gave birth to 3 children on consecutive Leap Days;her daughter in 1960 and her sons in 1964 and 1968.
(2) most generations born on February 29
In the Keogh family (Ireland and Great Britain), the father was born on Leap Day, 1940, the son in 1964 and the granddaughter in 1996.
6.You won't see another February 29 for 1460 days!

The city man saw a farmer in his yard, holding a pig up in his hands, and lifting it so that the pig could eat apples from an apple tree. The city man said to the farmer,I see that your pig likes apples, but isnt that quite a waste of time? The farmer replied,"Whats time to a pig?"

Sina Corp has warned that its popular microblogging service will suffer from Beijing's requirement that users of Sina Weibo register under their real names.

The real-name registration requirement, which the Chinese government has said must be completed by March 16, "will have a negative impact on user activity in the short term," Charles Chao, chief executive, told investors yesterday.
The warning is set to sour sentiment towards Sina shares, as it comes just as investors are getting impatient to see the company make money from Sina Weibo.
Sina reported a $9.3m net profit, 14 cents per share, for the fourth quarter of 2011 as opposed to a $100m loss a year earlier. However, excluding writedowns and other adjustments, earnings more than halved to 21 cents per share compared with a year earlier.
In the face of new government restrictions, slow moves by Sina to monetise Weibo and fierce competition in the microblogging market, the stock fell to $48 by the end of last year from a $142 peak last April, but it has recovered more than 13 per cent in 2012.
Sina said it aimed to start monetising Weibo in the second half of this year, an announcement long awaited by investors, but did not expect to see significant revenue contributions from the Twitter equivalent until next year. The company plans to make money from Weibo mainly through advertising, fees from enterprise accounts and revenue sharing from virtual goods.
A platform it launched last year on which third-party developers can offer games to Weibo users will end its free period in June, Mr Chao said.
Before that, Sina plans to pour more money into the service than last year. Mr Chao said he expected $160m of Weibo-related costs this year, compared with about $120m in 2011.
That comes as prospects for online advertising — Sina's main source of revenue — are uncertain. The company said it expected revenue in the first quarter to grow less than 10 per cent year-on-year, compared with 19 per cent last year. Mr Chao pointed to a drop of more than 3 per cent in traditional ad spending in the Chinese market in January as ecommerce companies are cutting their ad spend, and because of an expected decline in advertising by car companies, the largest advertisers on Sina's online portal, this quarter.
The new government rules are already affecting Sina Weibo. Mr Chao said more than 40 per cent of users who tried to complete registration failed to pass the identity verification. He said they would probably no longer be allowed to post messages after the March 16 deadline.

It's most people's biggest health fear. But whether you get dementia, scientists now believe, is mostly a matter of lifestyle; it hinges on what you eat every single day. Here's a guide to making the choices that will preserve a healthy mind—starting right now!

When it comes to aging, life can be cruel. There's plenty to...well...let's come right out and say it: think about. What will happen to my looks? What will happen to my body?

Will I still be able to pursue my interests? What will happen to my mind?

That last question is now the second leading health concern (after cancer) among adults in at least four Western countries—France, Germany, and Spain, as well as the United States—according to a recent survey by the Harvard University School of Public Health and the Alzheimer Europe consortium. Fear of developing dementia would likely stir even more concern if Americans didn't mistakenly believe a cure for Alzheimer's disease exists (more than 45 percent of U.S. respondents think there is an effective treatment). Despite the lack of a cure, great progress has been made in the past three decades in understanding the disease.

The most common cause of dementia, or severe cognitive decline, and the sixth leading cause of death in the U. S., Alzheimer's disease is marked by difficulty storing new memories and recalling recent events, loss of ability to track day-to-day information, a disrupted sense of time and space, social withdrawal, irritability, and mood swings. The neurodegenerative condition typically manifests after age 60. Life expectancy in the U.S. is currently about 78 years and rising. The 5.4 million Americans who suffer from the illness include 13 percent of those over age 65.

Scientists attribute the debilitating disorder to the gradual accumulation between brain cells of a toxic protein, beta-amyloid, that blocks the transmission of information from cell to cell, wipes out synapses, and disrupts basic neuron function, leading to cell death. Inflammatory processes are also involved in memory loss.

The vast majority of Alzheimer's cases—over 99 percent—occur spontaneously; they are not linked to genetic factors. But they are linked to obesity. Researchers find that the same lifestyle choices that lead people to become obese or develop heart disease also increase the risk of developing dementia.

It comes down to this: Choices we make throughout life about what we put in our bodies may protect against Alzheimer's, or delay its onset. At the very least, says neuroscientist Gary Wenk, "We can slow down the time that it takes for someone to get symptoms." Professor of psychology, neuroscience, and molecular virology, immunology, and medical genetics at The Ohio State University, Wenk is author of the book Your Brain on Food.

Heading off dementia, he insists, starts with what we eat. Food should be thought of the same way as the drugs we put in our body. They're all made up of chemicals. Everything we consume prompts a reaction in the brain. Picking the right foods can minimize damage to neurons and preserve a healthy mind as you age.

US President Barack Obamas account on popular social network Google Plus has been swamped by Chinese posts, which analysts said indicates the Chinese publics wish to communicate with high-ranking leaders through new media.

The latest entries on Obamas Google Plus page over the weekend were related to the upcoming presidential election. They have attracted around 1,000 comments, mostly in simplified Chinese with some English translations.

Information released earlier on the page also received massive numbers of replies in Chinese during the past two days, although the social website has been inaccessible to Chinese Web users since its launch in June last year.

Chinese comments on his page range from joking expressions to seemingly serious discussions on certain topics. “Its everyones obligation to promote the Chinese language,” joked a user named Joe Zhao.

One of the followers, named Eric Chen, explained that many Chinese people came here to post because they could visit the website “without depending on some special tools。” Referring to VPN or proxy needed to open facebook and twitter in mainland.

According to a BBC report, Internet users in many parts of the mainland found on February 20 they could access Google Plus, prompting some of them to suggest occupying the site. AFP reported that Google Plus appeared to be available in the mainland Sunday on some peoples mobile devices.

With hundreds of thousands of ‘apps’ available, smartphones allow users to do anything from checking their bank balance to booking a flight. But 71 per cent of owners use them simply to make a call, text or check Facebook, research shows. In fact, the study revealed that a typical person exploits only 10 per cent of their phone’s functions.

The survey – of 2,000 users – also found more than half had felt pressured to get the latest or most popular smartphone, such as Apple’s iPhone4 or a BlackBerry. The devices, which will be the top gadget on Christmas lists this year, are really pocket computers. As well as the capacity for the downloadable programs known as ‘apps’, they can browse the internet and send and receive emails.

The research by Envirofone, which recycles mobiles, estimates there are 11million smartphones in the UK. While there are many useful apps offering train information or sat-nav functions, others are bizarre. Jon Butler, of Envirofone, said: ‘The latest phones have become status symbols which look flash but aren’t fully utilised.’

Warren Buffett officially names farmer son Howard as successor.

In an interview with 60 Minutes that will air this Sunday, Warren Buffett announces his choice of son Howard — or "Howie", as he's known in the family — as his successor at Berkshire Hathaway.

The elder Buffett tells interviewer Leslie Stahl that his son will serve as a "guardian" of the company's "values" rather than a CEO, as long as the company's board approves. When America's second richest person Buffett Sr. dies, 56-year-old Howard will be "non-executive chairman", an unpaid position.

Howie won't direct strategy at the multi-billion-dollar investment firm, and he'll keep his day job as a corn and soybean farmer. (His own son Howard W. Buffett is also a farmer, and one of Forbes' Names You Need To Know for 2011.)

"You worry that somebody will be in charge of Berkshire that uses it as their own sandbox in some way," Buffett explains to Stahl in Sunday's interview.

"That changes the way that decisions are made in reference to the shareholders. The odds of that happening are very, very, very low, but having Howie there adds just one extra layer of protection."

For his part, Howie doesn't think he'll be called upon to take over any time soon. "He won't leave until he's buried in the ground," he says of his dad, who is healthy at age 81.

Berkshire Hathaway's stock price has remained largely unchanged in the hours since the announcement, possibly due to the non-executive nature of Howie's future role. Shares in the Omaha, Nebraska firm trade at over $100,000 apiece.
